·
Art Theory: philosophy that deals with the
nature, expression, and validity of the concept ‘art’. In the 70’s and 80’s theory
shifted towards semiotics and identity politics.
·
Semiotics: (Saussure) the study of language and
signs in relation to what they refer to (objective world), those who use them,
and systems of structure (syntax).
·
Theater of Cruelty: (Artaud) experimental form of theater
linked to surrealist and avant-garde movements.
·
The Iron Curtain: symbolize the political, physical, and
ideological boundaries between the Soviet Union and the West following WWII,
from 1945-1990.

All
text was extracted from the notes taken during the first meeting of a culture/theater
class.
·
Void: it was the only class I dropped during
my undergraduate career.
·
Art Major: I was a Fine/Studio Arts major and
doodled this while introducing myself.
·
Electronic Submissions: are often used to scan assignments for plagiarism. Note: an
artist friend of mine wrote an essay entirely by cutting and pasting text from
public documents as an art piece and it passed the leading anti-plagiarism
software.
·
Samuel Beckett: I was very excited; underlined his
name twice.
·
Puppet: My notes got fuzzy after Bunraku
(Japanese puppet theater).
